Washi Art

I started learning how to make art based on traditional Japanese washi papermaking techniques about 4 years ago. I used this handmade washi art style as the background for the pictures in the Lily and the Moon picture book published last year and exhibited some of this original artwork along with exhibits from nine other members of my art school at an exhibition of WASHI ART held at the Setagaya Art Museum in Tokyo from 14th-18th May 2014.
Neither paintbrushes nor paint are used to make the art. The base material is "kozo" which is made from the inner bark of the Japanese Kozo (a kind of Mulberry) tree. We dye the kozo and make the paper, embedding designs and pictures within the paper by using string, metal, pattern cutters and other original techniques.
Here are some photos taken at the exhibition. You can see the many different ways handmade washi art can be used.

Thank you, Mari.
There are so many different ways to use handmade washi. I can't wait to start on some new pictures as soon as I get some time.
